Get BB and/or GFB, dump your bonus action attack for something better, like recover hp, "parry", use lethal strike or activate other disciplines. - Thorn whip has a casting time of of one action, and as part of that action you get to make a melee spell attack. Even though you're making an attack roll it's part of casting the spell, so you're not using the attack action which means you don't get the extra attack.
